About our speakers

Toufic Sarieddine (Ph.D.) was born in Lebanon. He studied at the American University of Beirut and worked at the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees before earning his doctorate from Nagoya University’s Graduate School of International Development. His research focuses on the rise of China in the BRI era and its impact on US hegemony vis-à-vis the Global South with a focus on the Middle East and Southeast Asia. He currently resides in Nagoya, Japan, where he lectures at the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies and Nagoya City University. He has also written a book on China-Pakistan relations and articles on China-Middle East affairs.

Lorenzo Trombetta, Ph.D., is a Rome-based Senior Analyst on the Middle East for ANSA Italian News Agency and LiMes Italian Review of Geopolitics. He is an Arabist, historian, and author with three monographs focused on the contemporary history of Syria, along with various academic articles and book chapters on the subject. In 2015, he was recognized by the Syrian Studies Association for authoring the best academic article on Syria. From 1998 to 2022, he lived and worked in the Middle East, specifically in Damascus, Amman, and Beirut.
